A continued growth in demand for freight capacity to and from the Baltic states calls for a further expansion in Port of Karlshamn, why now DFDS deploys a third ferry between Karlshamn and Klaipeda. The danish shipping- and logistics group DFDS have had a favourable development for the line Karlshamn-Klaipeda with many record years. 2015 was no exception, where the freight volumes grew 5% for and passengers 7%, compared with 2014.
-When sanctions between EU and Russia was introduced some years ago we were concerned that this would have a negative effect. But, even if the freight volume destined for Russia has gone down, the development for trade to the Baltic countries on the other hand has been very positive, says Lars Malmström, local manager at DFDS in Karlshamn.
As a result of this, DFDS as from April with deploy the RoPax-vessel Patria Seaways, thereby adding two extra round trips per week between Karlshamn and Klaipeda.
-To start with, we will offer departures to meet the great demand for late freight departures from Karlshamn on Mondays and Fridays. But we also plan to increase to three departures during summer, when the demand for passenger capacity is higher and with a time table that better fits the needs of the passengers, Lars Malmström continues.
Patria Seaways has earlier been sailing on the route as from 2004, but was replaced by bigger vessel. Now she will join Optima Seaways and Victoria Seaways, together making 9 round trips per week. This will mean a capacity increase of about 20% for the freight customers.
