The Swedish Minister for Infrastructure, Mr Tomas Eneroth, came with the braking news that the missing 18 km railway link Karlshamn-Olofström will be constructed. Then Port of Karlshamn will be directly connected to the Volvo Cars (Geely) plant in Olofström and the large distribution centre of IKEA in Älmhult. At the same time Port of Karlshamn get a short cut to the main north-south railway line in Sweden.

- This new link is of national importance, says the Minister.

- We have really looked forward to these good news, says a delighted Mats Olsson, CEO at Port of Karlshamn.

- The extention of the Southeast Link will add much needed infrastructural capacity in the whole region to meet the growing demand for transportation.

- With this desicison the future looks very bright for Port of Karlshamn. Karlshamns importance as a competitive and strategic logistics node in the south Baltic region will be even stronger. Now we may continue to expand for the benefit of our customers and growth.

- This is a result of many years of work with information about the need for the new extended railway link Älmhult-Karlshamn and Port of Karlshamn has been very active in this work. Since years back we have proven that the growth in traffic constantly has exceeded our expectations, say Mats Olsson.

The whole 59 km long link Karlshamn-Älmhult will be electrificated all the way. The railway Olofström-Älmhult already exists, but is not electrificated and is frequently used by Volvo Cars. The construction is planned to start 2024.
